Exhibitions: PRESSED LETTERS – FINE PRINTING IN NEW ZEALAND SINCE 1975
This Christchurch Art Gallery exhibition presents some of the best examples of letterpress printing produced in New Zealand from 1975 to the present day. The mid-1970s saw major changes in the way text was printed, and techniques which had remained unchanged since their invention by Johannes Gutenberg in the 1450s were quickly superseded by modern digital technologies. Since then, however, these ‘obsolete’ methods of printing have been embraced by letterpress printers worldwide, who have established private presses focused on high quality, hand-made publications.
The exhibition presents some of the finest artisan books produced in New Zealand over the past 37 years and highlights the collaborative ethic that often exists between poets, artists and printers. Featuring titles from Joanna Margaret Paul, Ian Wedde, Bill Manhire, Ralph Hotere, Jenny Bornholdt, Alan Loney, Max Gimblett, Leo Bensemann, Bill Sutton, Michelle Leggott, Gretchen Albrecht, Gregory O’Brien, Tara McLeod and Brendan O’Brien.
