FOR THE CHILDREN OF CHRISTCHURCH
Bronwyn Hayward
Children today are confronted by many challenges:
environmental change, weakening democracies, growing
social inequality and a tottering global economy marked
by unprecedented youth unemployment. Yet on streets
everywhere, there is also a strong, youthful energy for
change. In her internationally acclaimed book, Children,
Citizenship and Environment: Nurturing a democratic
imagination in a changing world, University of Canterbury political scientist and youth and environment advocate Dr Bronwyn Hayward sets out an inspiring and optimistic
agenda for the future. The book, which is based on a four year study with 160 children growing up in Christchurch, has been selected as the feature title for the LitCam Children’s Literacy festival in Frankfurt in October, where the theme is children and democracy.
Bronwyn will discuss the making of the book and issues facing children and teenagers growing up in New Zealand. Half of all the author royalties from book sales are donated
to Child Poverty Action Group projects for the children of Christchurch.
Bronwyn Hayward talks with Associate Professor Susan St John of Auckland University, economist and national spokesperson for Child Poverty Action Group.
