THE STUFF OF LIFE

Joanne Harris, Nicky Pellegrino, Felicity Price

Good stories well told have transformative power. They can lift our spirits, enrich our lives and feed our souls – and offer us a much-needed escape, sometimes to more exotic destinations, sometimes just to another view of the world. These three authors have all written books that speak of the magic and joy that can be hidden in the difficult, mundane stuff of everyday life. They talk about their own work, and about the books that they love – the authors who have enhanced their lives and given them inspiration, delight and solace.

Joanne Harris is best known as the author of the Whitbread-shortlisted Chocolat (made into an Oscar-nominated film) and seven other bestselling novels. Her books have sold 5 million copies in British editions, 10 million worldwide, and have been translated into 26 languages. Peaches for Monsieur le Curé, and her second collection of short stories, A Cat, A Hat and a Piece of String, were published this year.

When Nicky Pellegrino started writing fiction it was her memories of childhood summers spent in Italy that flavoured her stories: the passions, the feuds but most of all the food. Liverpool-born, Nicky now lives in Auckland where she works as a freelance journalist. Her novels have been translated into 12 languages. The latest, When in Rome, has just been published.

Felicity Price is the author of six novels, the last two of which, Head Over Heels and A Sandwich Short of a Picnic, remained on the New Zealand bestseller lists for several months. She has also written a play, which has recently had a rehearsed reading at the Court Theatre, and last year attended the International Institute of Modern Letters Writers course at Victoria University.

Chair: Graham Beattie is a former bookseller and publisher who is now a full-time book reviewer, blogger and judge of book awards.
