DOUBLE HAPPINESS: HOW BULLSHIT WORKS
Joe Bennett
Bullshit has always been with us but the proliferation of media in the last century means we are now drowning in it. If we were to strip bullshit from our conversations, televisions, newspapers and airwaves, we would barely recognise what remained. In his biting new book, Double Happiness: How Bullshit Works, columnist and author Joe Bennett unpacks examples of everyday bullshit, commercial, political and spiritual, from New Zealand and around the world to expose the surprisingly few and surprisingly simple techniques that underlie it. As he suggests, there are two possible consequences of this exposure. One is that bullshit will be laughed out of existence forever. The other, more likely result, is that the book will make no difference and that bullshit will continue to proliferate and the bullshitters to prosper.
Joe lives in Lyttelton and was born in Eastbourne, England. After leaving Cambridge University, he taught English in many countries. He came to New Zealand for one year in 1987 and forgot to leave. Joe has been a full-time writer since 1998.
Joe Bennett talks with Chris Moore, the arts editor of The Press.
