THE SECRET LIFE OF THE NOVEL

Kate Grenville, Emily Perkins & Sue Woolfe

‘I’m writing a novel’ – it’s so easy to say and so hard to do. As all real writers know, creating convincing fiction is not a matter of waiting for inspiration. It is a craft and a discipline. Novelists Kate Grenville, Emily Perkins and Sue Woolfe, all of whom have written about or teach creative writing, discuss the role of research, creating credible characters, developing a workable plot, avoiding the bogey of telling rather than showing – and much more.

Kate Grenville’s bestselling novel The Secret River received numerous awards, including the Commonwealth Writers Prize. The Idea of Perfection won the Orange Prize for Fiction. Kate’s most recent novel is Sarah Thornhill, a sequel to The Secret River. She also wrote Searching for the Secret River, which describes the making of her famous novel.

Emily Perkins is the author of four novels and a collection of short stories. She teaches creative writing at the University of Auckland, and hosted TVNZ7’s The Good Word. Emily held the Buddle Findlay Sargeson Fellowship in 2006 and was made an Arts Foundation Laureate in 2011. Her new book is The Forrests.

Sue Woolfe is the author of the bestselling Leaning Towards Inï¬nity, which won the Christina Stead Award, Painted Woman, The Secret Cure and, published this year, The Oldest Song in the World. Sue teaches creative writing at Sydney University, and has co-authored, with Kate Grenville, Making Stories: How Ten Australian Novels Were Written.

Chair: Owen Marshall is an acclaimed and prize-winning novelist, short-story writer and poet who has been awarded a number of honours and fellowships.
