Laurence Fearnley has published eight novels. Her short stories have appeared in various anthologies as well as Landfall, Sport, the School Journal and National Radio. Her second novel, Room, was short listed for the Montana New Zealand Book Awards in 2001 and Edwin and Matilda was runner-up in the 2008 Montana New Zealand Book Awards. Her most recent novel, The Hut Builder, won the fiction category of the 2011 New Zealand Post Book Awards and was shortlisted for the international Boardman Tasker Prize for mountain literature..
Based in Dunedin, she was awarded the 2004 Artists to the Antarctica fellowship, the 2006 Island of Residencies fellowship in Tasmania and the 2007 Robert Burns fellowship at the University of Otago.
She has recently submitted her PhD in Creative Writing and is working on her ninth novel.
