Since Scott and Shackleton left from Lyttelton for the frozen continent, there has been a special relationship between Christchurch and Antarctica, especially through Operation Deep Freeze and Antarctica New Zealand. The scientific secrets of this unique and still largely untouched part of the world are a source of endless fascination and vital importance. Professor Chris Turney, Rebecca Priestley and Veronika Meduna, all of whom have visited and have a special interest in Antarctica, discuss the past and future of this land and its pivotal role in the future of our planet and its climate.

Scientist and journalist Veronika Meduna is a presenter/producer for Radio New Zealand National’s Our Changing World. She has written widely about science. Atoms, Dinosaurs and DNA, co-authored with Rebecca Priestley, won the 2009 Elsie Locke Award. Veronika has just published Science on Ice: Discovering the Secrets of Antarctica.

Award-winning science writer Rebecca Priestley has a PhD in the history of science, is author or editor of three books, and writes a weekly column for the Listener. In 2009 The Awa Book of New Zealand Science won the Royal Society of New Zealand Science Book Prize. Her latest book is Mad on Radium – New Zealand in the Atomic Age.

British geologist Professor Chris Turney is an Australian Research Council Laureate Fellow and Professor of Climate Change at the University of New South Wales, and has a particular interest in past and future  climate. He is the author of several popular science books, the latest of which is 1912: The Year the World Discovered Antarctica.
